Fresh Flavors: The Story Behind the Iconic Oberon Ale
When the weather gets warm and the wildflowers start to bud, it must mean Oberon season is around the corner in Pure Michigan!

Founded in 1983, Bell’s Brewery was one of Michigan’s first three craft breweries (it was originally known as the Kalamazoo Brewing Co,) and released its first beer two years later. What has become the classic Oberon Ale was first brewed in 1992 under the name SolSun — and it took off immediately. Spicy citrus notes with a hint of hops embody the sensations of spring, and this wheat beer was originally released to coincide with Major League Baseball's Opening Day.
Oberon Ale can now be found throughout Michigan and beyond the Great Lakes – from bottles to cans to mini kegs ready to share with friends. However the best way to savor this seasonal brew is straight from the tap while slowing down to enjoy a peaceful, warm-weather getaway.
As Michiganders embraced the fresh flavors of Oberon Ale, the annual March release inspired local celebrations like midnight tappings and bar crawls. Year after year the events grew bigger, Oberon Day has become a beloved Midwest phenomenon where thousands flock to Kalamazoo to enjoy the season’s first sip. An official flag-raising at 11 a.m. kicks off Oberon Day, along with live bands, food and Oberon swag — and of course, Oberon Ale on tap all over the city.
Now an official state holiday, Oberon Day is Michigan’s way of welcoming the change of seasons while celebrating its homegrown brewing traditions. The recipe has remained true to its original release, but Bell’s Brewery fans will be happy to know that this year they’re launching Oberon Light. Just as easy to drink, with under 100 calories, it’ll be available all summer long.
A true local tradition, Oberon is one of many Michigan craft beverages that captures the spirit of spring and is an essential embodiment of the Great Lakes State’s identity.
