Breakfast in bed is always a great gift for mom come Mother's Day, and flowers are great too. This year, elevate the gift to an experience and have breakfast at a sweet waterfront inn, enjoy flowers in a garden, or spend time together at a festival of food, a parade and more. Here are just a few ways to celebrate Mother's Day the Pure Michigan way.

1. Indulge Along the Lake

The Harbor Grand in Southwest Michigan, located on a harbor in the sweet Lake Michigan town of New Buffalo, isn't just a great base for a stay highlighted by shopping excursions, local theater and strolls on the beach. It's a getaway in itself with the best kind of indulging. Craving ice cream? There's a Ben and Jerry's hotline that leads to delivery of the carton of your choice to the room; you just specify the number of spoons. There is breakfast in bed with optional mimosas and evening S’mores around a fire pit (cocktails, too), blankets provided. If weather is suitable, there are beach towels and chairs, if not, a DVD library for an in-room chick flick or adventure film fun. Treat mom to a relaxing, peaceful spa day at the Revive Spa or adventure together and surf with Third Coast Surf Shop.

2. Wine and Dine

Mother's Day falls in the middle of Michigan Wine Month, making it the perfect time to head to Traverse City. If your tradition is brunch, try starting with the Mother's Day brunch at Black Star Farms. Or go with the total splurge and book the two-night VIP Wine and Spa Weekend at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Package includes a VIP wine tour ticket to L. Mawby with food, history and wine education, a spa treatment (per person), a wine tumbler and more.

Send a card on the day of, but plan the real celebration for the Sunday after Mother's Day on Eastern Market's annual Flower Day. The market partners with the Metropolitan Detroit Flower Growers Association, and members arrive bearing gifts of many colors for your gardens at great prices. Best of all, they offer planting and growing tips—free. After, explore market shops, restaurants and murals.

4. Book a Grand Getaway

Plan a weekend at Grand Hotel's Mother's Day package. Start with a ferry ride to Mackinac Island, then ride in a tony carriage toward one of the nation's last remaining Victorian wood-framed hotels. There’s the special cocktail reception, the hotel's famed multi-course dinners, a Mother's Day buffet and time to lounge in a rocker on the world's longest porch, bike the island or indulge at afternoon tea with live harp music.

5. Adventure Together

There's the boasting factor of saying you've traversed America's longest canopy walk, but the biggest reason to head through the Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens where you'll walk 40 feet above ground, is the mid-May beauty of a forest at the height of spring re-birth. Soak in the scents and bird song; then head to your booked room at Midland's H Hotel and soak in the hotel's spa tub, swim in the indoor pool and have time together in the suite.
