The Au Sable River Trail is a 3.9-mile trail loop that passes through old-growth trees along the banks of the Au Sable River. Stepping into this forest is truly a unique experience, as the winding trail crosses over the East Branch of the Au Sable River twice and takes visitors through a grove of old-growth eastern hemlock trees and through plantations of red pine planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Excellent birding opportunities are also found along this trail. The terrain is considered suitable for beginners, making it a perfect relaxing day hike for all ages. The trail can be accessed from the parking lot near the park headquarters and is open to hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but the trails are not groomed. The trail connects to the Mertz Grade Trail, which connects to the Old Growth Forest Trail, offering the opportunity for a longer hike.
