Formerly Kingman Museum. A 150-year-old natural history and science collection inspiring Battle Creek MI with education programs and offsite exhibits.
What started as a small collection of specimens and artifacts donated by Edward Brigham in the late nineteenth century expanded into the Battle Creek Public School Museum, one of the first museums in America to be owned and operated by a public schools system. In 1933, Brigham moved the museum and its collections into a new building overlooking beautiful Leila Arboretum and renamed the Kingman Museum of Natural History in honor of Emma C. Kingman. In the late 1990s, Battle Creek Public Schools were no longer able to fund the museum. Kingman reopened in 2003 as an independent not for profit institution under the direction of a dedicated board of directors. After the pandemic shutdown in 2020, Kingman moved out of the arboretum building into temporary storage. Today Kingman Collections operates as a community project fund of Encourage BC! with ongoing education programs and offsite exhibits throughout Calhoun County until the museum building is renovated and restored.
